This is my car's 25th birthday. So here are 25 things I've learned along the way.
1. Over the years, bulbs burn out. There should be illumination in the headlight/fog light panel, the cabin temperature adjuster, fan speed adjuster, all three sliders in the climate control, and inside the ash tray.
2. What is the "BC" on the end of the turn signal stalk? Push in and it cycles through the OBC display.
3. Why is there a big vent on the top of the dashboard? In later e28's this vent was disabled. For about $12.00 on ebay you can buy the earlier, working vent. Takes about 5 minutes to install. Your disabled vent still has all the needed parts just waiting to hook up.
4. What are these two little prongs on the left side of the glove box? They are for a rechargeable BMW flashlight. Buy one on ebay or from
www.bavauto.com. You want the white one.
5. The switches for the power windows and the sunroof can be lighted. The power is already there, you just need the lighted switches. Easy and inexpensive.
6. Annoying clicking from under the dash? Might be the secret odometer originally installed to turn on the O2 sensor light in the check panel at 60,000 miles. Unplug it.
7. The temperature control dial in your dash actually works. Set it to the coldest setting and the AC compressor works non-stop. Set it to a higher temperature setting setting and the compressor cycles on/off to maintain the set temperature.
8. As best I can determine, all USA dashboards and steering wheels are black. I spent many hours looking for a "pacific blue" dashboard.
9. In the OBC, a light bar, easily replaced, illuminates the display of time, date, etc. But there is a second bulb, also easily replaced, that illuminates the push buttons.
10. The "check" button in the overhead display only checks that the light bulbs in the unit are working.
11. The strangely placed black plastic triangle on the rear shelf is meant to hold the end of the center passenger seat belt. BTW, it doesn't click in, it's friction fit.
12. The glove box has a light - regardless of ignition switch position. Open it, and the light comes on.
13. There is a chime/gong to let you know when you have left the key in the ignition, when outside temp is 37 degrees F or below, when you exceed the max speed you've set into your OBC. Unplug the sucker. It's under the driver's side dash near the outside of the car.
14. Properly tuned, the e28 doors close with a d-minor chord.
15. If your doors creak while you are driving, replace the "door latch buffers," About $1.00 each, it's a 4 minute repair.
16. That yellowing chrome trim around the windshield and the rear window isn't chrome at all. It's a thin strip of metal foil encased in plastic. The plastic yellows, and cannot be polished. Do a search for "lock strip."
17. Bite the bullet and pay $40 per year for membership in the BMW Car Club of America (BMWCCA). The technical advice in the magazine will save your ass at least once.
18. BMW included a kit in the trunk which has the tools to do almost all minor repairs. On the right side, there is a chromed rod with a gray plastic end. That's the tool to insert into a lug bolt hole when you are changing a tire.
19. Is everything working except your cruise control? Check the small blue plug behind the instrument cluster. It can be attached two ways. The easier position is wrong.
20. Are your hood struts not holding up the hood like they should? Replace them with hood struts from the 7 series, and as a bonus you will get increased access.
21. Annoying squeal from engine compartment? Check your alternator. The mounting bushings fail, and allow the alternator to twist. A cheap and easy fix to realign the pulleys.
22. Fading hood, trunk, and wheel BMW roundel emblems. All can be easily replaced. The wheel emblems are simply decals - peel the old one off, clean the surface, and glue on the new one.
23. Try the BMW "gummi pflege" product. Relatively inexpensive, and beats products like Armor All hands down.
24. Leather interior not aging well? Check into
www.leatherique.com. I used it to repair and re-dye my seats, and the result is amazing.
25. Have you sat in a rear passenger sear of your e28 lately? If not, try it. I found the net behind the front seats was sagging badly. A simple fix was to shorten the top strip.
